Rear Foot Elevated Split Squat. Normally lifters will set up on a standard bench. But leg length and anthropometry are not standard, so it doesn't make sense for everyone to use the same height bench. Too low of a bench wouldn't be ideal for a tall lifter (over the height of around 6'2").
Today I want to cover proper and improper exercise technique for the split squat. I'll go ahead and note up front that everything I'm going to discuss would apply to the myriad lunging variations as well. The only difference is the added component of movement (forwards, backwards, alternating or whatever).
The split squat stimulates the same leg muscles as the squat, but the single leg foundation places a significant amount of tension on the abdominal muscles with the added benefit of boosting your ...
Barbell Split Squats. Place an appropriate amount of weight on a barbell in a squat rack. Once ready, position yourself underneath the barbell. Keep your core tight and drive your hips forward to lift the barbell off the rack. Step away from the rack.
The split squat is an exercise that primarily targets the hips and legs. Using a barbell, a pair of dumbbells or just your own body weight, you lunge forward on one leg, then push through your thighs and backside to return to a standing position. Several major muscle groups are worked out by this exercise,...
With split squats or lunges (an alternative) we're building the muscles involved in the squat, but also improving ankle and knee stability.
The rear foot elevated split squat (aka the Bulgarian split squat) has become my primary lower body strength exercise. I don't back squat, rarely front squat, and when I do, it's usually with lighter weights. (Please, hear me out before you slap the wuss tag on me and search for the next "do squats and drink milk" article.)
This free body diagram shows the forces involved in the squat movement. For the purposes of determining power, we will use the following values: m = Mass of load = 150kg; d = Distance travelled = 0.96 meters (note: this value is for only one direction of movement and will be doubled to determine the total distance that the load must travel)
For back squats, the weight rests on the traps (the muscles on the sides of your neck), where it’s generally easier to squat a heavier load. Hands should be facing forward, along the same plane as shoulders, with elbows pointing down to the floor. Your arms will form a W shape along the bar.
